What’s in a Name?

What’s in a Name?

Inspired by Reuben Fischer-Baum’s maps of popular baby boy and girl names, we decided to create our own animated map of popular donor names across the United States, depicting shifting trends in names since we launched.

We find this name map interesting for two reasons.

First, it shows the growth of DonorsChoose.org – we might be biased but we love watching the “no donors” states being taken over by awesome donor names.

Second, alongside the growth of DonorsChoose.org, especially after we went national in 2007-ish, our top donor names began to trend alongside the most popular names in the US. Names like Jennifer, Mary, David, and Michael dominated many states in recent years.

Your turn: there’s another insight, but we will let you discover that yourself. Hint: check when these names were most popular as baby names in Reuben Fischer-Baum’s map .

If you discover any other cool name patterns, share your observations in the comments!
